Purpose:
The Idaho jazz society exists...
- To promote and encourage educational endeavors in the field of jazz in Idaho
- To support jazz education in Idaho by providing scholarship assistance
- To promote and publicize jazz festivals, concerts and events throughout Idaho
- To provide volunteer resources to help manage and host the annual Sun Valley Jazz Jamboree each October
Past to Present:
The Idaho Jazz Society is a charitable 501(c)3 corporation formed in 1990 concurrent with the planning of the first annual Sun Valley Jazz Jamboree. It was specifically intended to work in partnership with that festival by providing volunteers to help it run smoothly, and to continue its subsequent reputation as the premiere traditional jazz festival in the country.
In recognition that our name (Idaho Jazz Society) implies much more than just traditional jazz, swing and ragtime, we have more recently begun to be pro-active in making ourselves available as a resource to all jazz activities and events state-wide.
Operating Philosophy:
We welcome into membership any who share our interests in jazz in Idaho. Our board of directors meet with the officers as often as necessary to discuss operational issues, planning and budgeting, and reviewing scholarship applications. General meetings of the membership are typically held twice a year in both Boise and Sun Valley. These meetings often begin with featured entertainment by young artists, and are often attended by the directors of the Sun Valley Jazz Jamboree. A portion of these meetings is often spent in planning and evaluating the Sun Valley event. More recently we are seeking to expand our umbrella to other types of jazz, and have begun working more broadly within the greater Idaho jazz community.
We are presently organized with a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer, serving as officers elected by the membership. Additional elected board members also serve three-year terms.
